Funny My daughter and I both were laughing about this bookThe story itself is about a pig farmer who finds a gold nugget and buys a great hog to take to the fair in Laredo but she is having all kinds of issues trying to get there and it all starts with a river that she can't get across Its kind of like There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Flyin that something happens and it gets repeated with the next item on the next page and so on The language is pretty funny and we read it outloud with as much Texas twang as we could come up with and both ended up laughing Loved the illustrations to cute

This is a goofy cause and effect story with plenty of Texas tinged slang and silly sayings It no doubt would be a big hit as a read aloud The illustrations are also super goofy and cartoony Vegn families note Desert Rose is a pig farmer and every year she buys the biggest fattest pig she can find to enter the annual Texas fair There is no discussion of why she is raising the pigs or what happens when she sells them However vegn parents may wish to skip this one because of these themes

This book is hilarious Desert Rose takes a shortcut with her hog and has so much trouble that she learns ultimately that sometimes shortcuts fail She is looking for help to get her hog moving from different animals forming a chain of sorts She is trying to get to the country fair in Laredo on time As each animal claims some excuse Desert Rose has funny retorts playing with language Finally she strikes a deal with a shady and intimidating armadillo He is true to his word and then Desert Rose is also

Finally a Show Me Readers Award Nominee that I likedThe text in Desert Rose is very cute and it feels as though it should be read with a big Southern accent and yee haw Poor Rose is only trying to use a shortcut to get her hog to the state fair but the hog won't take a drink the coyote won't bite the hog the snake won't scare the coyote and so on This is a circular story and Rose keeps trying to find someone or something to help get her hog to the fair Readers will enjoy seeing how Rose gets everything to work and the funny moral at the end is too cute The artwork is bright and engaging It might be a bit long for storytime but if you have older readers who can sit through longer books this is worth giving a try

Fun book Not sure if it's what you call a circular story or if there's another term for it Desert Rose finds a gold nugget while she's mucking the pig pen She trades the gold nugget for the biggest hog in town and starts off for the state fair in Laredo When the highfalutin hog stops cooperating Desert Rose has to seek help from passersby Hilarity ensues
