This is a sharply funny history of the Tory Party from the 1960's to 2005 although Wheatcroft illuminates the Tory party with much reference to its ancient historyThe book is chock full of little stories and crack up comments from the vast rogues gallery that stalks England through these 40 odd years and Wheatcroft weaves these characters through the events with skillful observationsThe book is largely but not uite chronological some chapters focus on particular aspects such as his excellent skewering of the chattering artistic classes and their deranged hatred of the Tories demanding that the Government subsidise activities aimed at subverting themThe broad observation of the book is how the Tory Party changed from being a party of aristocratic gentlemen to become dominated by ordinary people it used to be run by people who were someone now it's run by people who want to be someone to paraphrase the author if the book falls down in one place it's where Wheatcroft makes a few too many derogatory comparisons between the glorious old days of Victorian politics and the degraded modern world of universal suffrage The notion that Britain was a better place when Government was elected by a populated by an elite few is hard to stand upBut then maybe his point is that at least by 2005 the Tory Party are not really a Tory Party any I wonder how Wheatcroft feels now 2016 that the Tory party and nation are being run once by a cabal of old Etonians??

An interesting look at the changing social makeup of the Tories and how that made it difficult for the party to find cohesion in the 1980s and 1990s Wittily written
