A laudable attempt at a candid survey of radical conservatism irretrievably weighed down by over extension clunky English too many tangential drifts and shifting language registers Dahl covers some interesting ground his overview of Mannheim is perceptive as is his analysis of the Conservative Revolution However both are cursory at best and his third part on the contemporary pre 911 radical right is synoptic still Thematic proximity aside there is little to tie those sections together and the author would have gained much in focusing on only one of them I am surprised that as prestigious a series as 'Theory Culture and Society' would publish what appears to be a Swedish dissertation inexpertly translated into English that demanded far stringent editing This is unfortunate because the book touches on many interesting authors Mannheim as mentioned and the usual roster of Moeller van den Bruck Schmitt Junger or Spengler but also social scientists like Freyer Gehlen or Luhman and Dahl displays a rare willingness to take the radical rightists' ideas seriously ethnopluralism political theology and especially 'anti reflexivity' are all compellingly conceptualised but inaptly applied to a rag tag collection of historically disparate examples

Purely interesting from a historical standpoint Its analysis ranges from the mildly interesting to the incredibly stupid uotes like The point is that racism is an infernal game Anti racism can increaseracism by viewing the colour of the skin as an essential uality and in this way it serves the mechanisms of racism Still if you want a relatively outdated introduction to right wing anti liberalismradical conservatism I guess you could read this

A somewhat messy overview of 'radical conservatism' which includes phenomena like the European New Right Conservative Revolutionaries Traditionalists etc However the author seems to use terms like 'fascism' 'radical conservative' etc in a less than strict manner and some sections feel like summaries of various books he has read than a concise presentation
