E and full of fascinating facts For example when an opossum plays dead it isn't pretending opossums actually do enter a catatonic deathlike state Armadillos seuester air in their guts blow up to twice their normal volume and paddle across the water And beavers stockpile food for winter by caching it in beneath a raft of branches which gets frozen in place and keeps them well supplied until springA guide not to identifying mammals but to understanding wha. This book was provided by the publisher for review purposesAs a biologist I used Peterson's Field guides throughout my study So when I got the chance to review this book I jumped at the chance My children love to sit and look through the books at the photos and learn new things about the organisms inside This book was no exception My daughter and I flipped through the book stopping to read when we found a mammal of interest For her it could have been because the animal was cute For me usually it was because I didn't know much about that particular mammal The pictures are incredible the writing is exceptional and the information contained within the book makes this a must have for the field guide shelves

This isn't a book you read straight through but a fine reference describing the range habits appearance and behavior of all of those mammals who are our neighbors in North America Like a snoopy neighbor I read up on mice chipmunks foxcoyote fisher skunk raccoon seal and deer and can now better appreciate their tracks sounds and the wiley ones who raid my vegetable garden and pantry

I read this book over a period of months It's great and useful for anyone interested in wildlife I read parts of it in preparation for a Tracking Evaluation and it was indeed helpful Many people might thing the foxes on the cover are playing Not so Those gaping mouths indicate aggression The book is filled with fascinating information and fills a spot neglected by other field guides
